Which R4i card to buy and why?

We recently received this email from one of our members about their decision as to which R4 DS card to go for….. and thought it may also be helpful to share with others..

I had heard about these R4i cards and the question kept running through my mind, why do i need one and which one is the best?. Most of my friends have R4 cards and they kept saying to me “hey go and get your hands on one of these beauties!” But to be honest I did not quite get it, as i am not that technical!

So I did a little research into the world of the R4 DS card and other variations. There are so many to choose from, such as the R4i SDHC, M3i Zero, N5, iEDGE, SuperCard DSOnei Mini, R4i 3DS card, etc. I have to say the list was pretty endless and I was still confused.!!!

I asked myself this one vital question…. What IS the DIFFERENCE between all of these R4 DS cards???

By the looks of it they all did pretty much the same. The main benefit is that you can back up all of your DS games, homebrew games, music and video files, store them on a tiny Micro SD and slot this into the back of the R4i DS card. So, no more struggling with a handful, and in my case a pocket full, of cartridges. I have to say that at this point I felt quite excited on getting my hands on one of these little DS cards!

I noticed that some of the DS cards claimed to work on the Nintendo 3DS console and others on the Nintendo DSi. I have a brand new sparkly 3DS!!!!! Yes yes I know I’m a lucky boy!
So my quest to find my holy DS card went in search of one compatible with the Nintendo 3DS console.

Unfortunately I was still at a loss as to which ds card to go for? Like I said there were many to choose from all seemingly doing the same job! This I have to say seemed a bit pointless! Why make something that’s already been made? There was the R4i 3DS card, the M3i Zero, DSOnei Mini and the DSTTi to name but a few! At this point I thought my mates will be able to point me in the right direction, then i suddently got bombarded with…..

“Have you considered your consoles current software version?” they asked….erm no…

“Do you know what capacity of Micro SD card you require?” Doh!

These are things I had not even considered! It all seemed like hard work! Lucky i found this site which really helped me select what i needed!

Ok so after investigating my console and getting to know it, i located my software version by selecting the “spanner” icon on it’s home screen…and there it was as clear as day situated on the upper screen in the lower right hand corner…. “ver.2.1.0-4E”

So I now had more information to help me get the card that would suit my console the best?

Well it was very apparent that the most favourable and most widely used and available for the 3DS console is the R4i 3DS card. Going off reviews it seems easy to set up too which is a bonus as I have not got a clue :-/

So I decided the R4 3DS card was the one for me! Now to find a reputable company to get it off!! After reading your site further i decided to try your recommended site m3izero.co.uk. I contacted them directly to see if the R4 card they supplied was compatible with my 3DS console running on the ver.2.1.0-4E software….apparently this is crucial! They replied quickly and confirmed it was!
I opted for the R4i 3DS 8GB bundle to allow room for all of my games and music files. I have gotta say that i received the card within in a few days and followed their setup guide without any hassles and i have now been happily using my R4 3DS card for a few weeks…. i now see what all the fuss is about, its awesome!!

Anyway thanks for your great site, i couldnt have managed without it.

Cheers,

Trev!
