Will my old R4 revolution card work with my 3DS?

We received this question from several of our users about their old R4 Revolution cards and thought it useful to cover the topic with a quick blog post:

So your old trusty R4 Revolution card has been serving you well over the years, tirelessly working in your Nintendo DS console and entertaining you for hours at a time. But you decide its about time to get with the latest technology and upgrade to the latest 3DS console. Who can blame you, the new 3DS consoles are brilliant and you will wonder why you haven’t upgraded before! So the question now is, will that faithful old R4 Revolution card work with your new 3DS console? Unfortunately the answer is no, there is no software upgrade that you can apply to the card which will allow it to work with the 3DS console. As technology has moved on, the hardware in the old R4 Revolution card is not compatible with the 3DS console. This is a real shame, we know, it would be so easy just to plug your old R4 card into the new console and be up and running again. Unfortunately you will have to purchase a new card, which is called an R4 3DS card, this is 100% compatible with the new console and will have you up and running in no time. The good news is that you can re-use your micro SD card from your old R4 revolution. It is best to format the micro sd card and then copy across the latest kernel software for your R4i 3DS. Before formatting its a good idea to backup your own files as you will be able to copy these back onto the card once the kernel software is added, these files will then be accessible for you via the R4 interface similar to the interface on your old R4.

We hope this has been useful, please make sure to purchase your R4i 3Ds card from a reputable R4 online store to avoid receiving a fake card.
